Tijuana x Toluca
Tijuana continued their quietly impressive start to life under Miguel Herrera with a 2-1 away win over Chiapas on Saturday. Gabriel Hauche rounded the goalkeeper to put Tijuana in the lead in the 63rd minute and Kevin Gutierrez calmly fired in a rebound to secure victory 20 minutes later, just two minutes after Chiapas had equalised. Tijuana have gone under the radar this season, perhaps because they have drawn so many games (six of the ten played so far), but they have only been beaten once and look well placed to make the playoffs.
Having endured a disappointing season to date, Toluca took out their frustration on the league’s whipping boys Dorados de Sinaloa in Sunday’s 3-0 home win. Enrique Triverio put the home side ahead in the first half and the game was effectively over after Dorados had Nestor Vidrio sent off in the 63rd minute. Triverio scored another four minutes later and Christian Cueva added a third just three minutes after that. That result brought Jose Cardozo’s side within five points of the playoff places, but they will not face opponents as obliging as Dorados again this season and Tijuana will prove a much tougher test.
