Southampton x Chelsea
Southampton FC are a very good EPL team as they still manage defensive-elite levels even after selling most of their top defensive players including Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers to other clubs. They have done extraordinary considering the circumstances as manager Ronald Koeman has pulled this squad together against all odds to currently sit 4th in the EPL table after just 18 games. In their last match on Friday, Southampton beat Crystal Palace 3-1 on the road in a very fine showing on Boxing Day. Sunday they travel back to home grounds. They are one of the deadliest home sides in the league with only 2 losses and 6 wins over 9 home games. Southampton score at a ridiculous rate in front of the home fans as they have amassed 21 goals scored against a mere 6 allowed. This will boost their confidence against the theoretical best team in world football, Chelsea FC. All the skill in the world may not save them though as Chelsea only have lost 1 time this season. However, if any team can give them another loss it is Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium where they have been dismantling opposing offenses and defenses. One of the best passers in the EPL, Dusan Tadic, will look to add to his impressive 6 assists as he is currently 3rd place on the stat list for the league. If he can pick out top team striker Graziano Pellè, who has 8 goals in 18 EPL appearances, Southampton will end up challenging Chelsea more than they are used to. League-leading goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who has 8 clean sheets gathered, will need to be in top form against the deadly attack of Chelsea if Southampton are to stand a chance of gathering points on Sunday.
Chelsea FC are arguably the best team in world football at this point. Jose Mourinho is considered the best manager still actively coaching. Diego Costa is the best goal scorer in the English Premier League. The list of exploits goes on and on for this amazingly talented club. They have only lost 1 game this season in all competitions which have some believing they cannot be stopped. In their last game on Friday, they managed to beat West Ham soundly 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. On Sunday, their 2nd game in 3 days, Chelsea travel to one of the toughest EPL venues in Southampton, England. Fortunately, for the Chelsea supporters, no injuries or suspensions for their team as they look to be in top fitness for this game. Diego Costa and Eden Hazard will swarm the Southampton defensive 5 on Sunday, giving them everything they got as they attempt to add to their impressive 19 goals combined in league play this season. On the road, Chelsea have put away 2 goals per match while allowing only 1 goal. This success will be hard to come by on Sunday as they are on short rest as well as traveling into Southamptons terrifying home stadium. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will want to add to his 7 Clean Sheetsthus tying league-leading Southampton keeper Forster with 8 on the season. Chelsea will struggle early on to find scoring room against the 5 defender formation of Southamptons, but we ultimately expect them to win this game on the road as they are the best team in world football today.
